CAOLA

Косметическая компания широко представленная в СССР в 80-х годах.
Мужской лосьон после бритья 'BARBON', шампуни, молочко для тела и крем продавались в магазине "Балатон" рядом с одноимённым кинотеатром на площади Индиры Ганди.

The Hungarian chemical industry played a defining role in the commercial and scientific life of the region in the last one and half century. The fate of our company, similarly to other firms, was fundamentally influenced on several occasions by our variable, sometimes stormy Hungarian history.

The legal predecessor of our company was founded by József Hutter soap maker in 1831, in Budapest at the old Váci Street (at the place where the house at Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út 30. is located).
Mr. Hutter was the first one in the trade who introduced sales in the company shop of the factory; his products became popular and later on very sought-after. The family enterprise by 1906 evolved into a company of shareholders. In 1917 Hutter Rt. founded the Elida Magyar Illatszer és Pipereszappan Rt. (Elida Hungarian Perfume and Toilet Soap Corp.) exclusively for manufacturing washing and toilet soap.
The next important event happened nearly 100 years ago in the company history. On 1st November 1930 the company merged with the English company of Lever Brothers Ltd. and the Hungarian name was changed to Hutter és Lever Rt.
In 1896 one of the first significant events of the industry took place when Machlup Family founded Flora Első Magyar Stearingyertya és Szappangyár Rt (Flora First Hungarian Stearin Candle and Soap Factory Corp.). The company was mainly interested in leather manufacturing, and for the processing of leather significant amount of soap was required. They manufactured the esteemed and famous Flora soap, which was among the best makes of the 1930s. The factory was bought out in 1940 by Hutter és Lever Rt.
Titán Vegyipari Művek Rt. (Titán Chemical Works Corp.) was built by the Department of Defence with Italian prisoners of war in 1918. The three operating buildings (boiler room with chimney) was originally built for an army cloakroom, however after the war it could not be used for the purposes it was built for, therefore the ministry rented them to industrial companies. One part of building was used by the Consumption Association of Civil Servants, it was transferred into a carpenter workshop, later on soap and household chemicals were manufactured in the unit. The plant was modernised in 1925, and it was sold. The “brain” of the new plant was Dr. Kálmán Noseda, the previous chemical engineer of the Klein soap factory. The company was brought under the state’s property in 1948, and in 1950 it started to operate under the name of Budapesti Illatszer és Pipereszappangyár (BIP) (Budapest Perfume and Toilet Soap Factory).
We should not miss out Baeder Illatszer Rt. (Baeder Perfume Corp.), which was founded by Baeder Hermann. He was born in 1876 and after completing his studies, he learnt about perfume industry and art of soap making abroad, e.g. in America. Already in 1908 he opened a perfumery laboratory in Budapest, but the First World War broke the initial upturn. The chemist after his return from the war immediately got down to work and founded his factory in 1918. The factory continuously improved the range and volume of its products. The products distributed under the brand names of Caola and Ovenall gained outstanding reputation. The daughter of Baeder Hermann was called Carole, but the girl could not pronounce her name correctly, everyone thought she was called Caola. The proud dad named one of the products after the charming name, which later on became very successful. Soon nearly 800 various beauty care products and household chemicals were manufactured in the total of four plants.
Even that time the factory boosted an outstanding export activity. It held depots in Milano. Zagreb, Prague, New York and Oradea. In 1948 the company was nationalised, and in 1950 it was relocated to the Titán Vegyipari Művek (Titán Chemical Works).
When reviewing the national chemical industry it is very important to mention the company called Schimmel és Tsa Rt. (Schimmel and Co. Corp.), which was founded in 1923. The company was the legal predecessor of the Kompozíció Illóolaj-, Esszencia és Vegyészeti Gyár (Essential oil-, Essence and Chemical Factory). The aim of the company’s foundation was to supply the Hungarian customers with liqueur-, palinka (brandy)-, and rum essences, essential oil, artificial and natural flower oils and fine chemicals. Unfortunately they could not avoid either the historical knock out. The company was nationalised and from 1963 it was attached to the Kozmetikai és Háztartásvegyipari Vállalat (Beauty care and Household Chemical Company).
During the nationalisation procedure several large companies and family enterprises were brought in the “big common pot”. We do not have the facilities here to mention all of them, but it is a common characteristics of all the previously mentioned companies, that later on all of them were merged in the Kozmetikai és Háztartásvegyipari Vállalat (Beauty care and Household Chemical Company).
Various foreign companies’ affiliates went down the same road, such as Beiersdorf Vegyészeti Gyár Rt. (Beiersdorf Chemical Corp.) or Magyarországi Odol Művek Rt. (Hungarian Odol Works Corp.).
Majority of the plants and equipment survived the Second World War, therefore in the next few years production was started up again. From 1948 after the indemnification discussion it was made possible for the Hungarian state to take over the proprietary rights of the factories. After the profile changes of various factories the Hungarian chemical industry was basically split into two major companies.
The Illatszer és Kozmetikai Vállalat (Perfume and Beauty Care Company) was founded in 1962, and from 1st July 1963 it was called Kozmetikai és Háztartásvegyipari Vállalat (KHV) (Beauty Care and Household Chemical Company), which is called Caola since 1981.
The company was transferred to a company of shareholders in 1992.
In 1993 the company was privatised, when majority of the company was transferred to private property again.
Since 1999 the company is operated under the name of Caola-Alfa Kozmetikai Rt.
Since 2006 the company is operated as private limited company.
This short historical review was written without aiming at a complete precise history lesson, but trying to describe the place and role of our company, the Caola-Alfa Kozmetikai Zrt. in the history of the Hungarian chemical industry.
