Claude Fraysse

A talented nose Claude Fraysse was hired to create the first Weil parfums. Fraysse had trained at Firmenich; he was considered to be the very top nose at Yardley, which was one of the largest commercial perfume houses at the time. Fraysse was famous not only for his own work as a perfumer but because his talent overflowed into his family tree. Three of his children went on to become perfumers of note, as did at least one of his grandchildren.
Above, Jacqueline's brother Andre Fraysse (1902-1976) in the late 1920s. He became Lanvin's in-house perfumer in 1927.

With the help of his daughter perfumer Jacqueline Fraysse, Claude created the first trio of perfumes offered by Weil in 1927/1928, the so-called fur perfumes: Hermine- a sweet tropical floral scent, Chinchilla Royal- a jasmine/rose blend and Zebeline- a grand floral chypre with deep vetiver/oak notes.

Perfumer Claude Fraysse can be credited with two great creations: perfume and perfumers. His great perfumes were those created for Parfums Weil, the perfumery offshoot of Parisien furrier, Les Fourrures Weil. His perfumer creations were his children and, in at least one case, a talented perfumer grandchild.
Claude Fraysse's perfumer offspring include Jacqueline Fraysse, who worked with her father at Weil, André Fraysse (1902-1976), who created a line of successful perfumes for Lanvin, and Hubert Fraysse who, in addition to his work for Synarome in Geneva, is also credited with creating the second (1948) version of Weil's Antilope. Claude Fraysse's grandson, Richard Fraysse, (André's son) became the distinguished in-house perfumer for Caron under the Ales Group ownership.
Before becoming associated with Weil, Claude Fraysse had worked for Firmenich in Geneva and had been top perfumer for Yardley Perfumes of London. At Weil his creations, in some cases with the assistance of his daughter Jacqueline (who also created perfumes for Weil on her own), included Zibeline (1928), Chinchilla Royal (1928), Hermine (1931) and Une Fleur (1931).

Une Fleur Weil 1931

Created by Firmenich's Claude Fraysse and his daughter, Jacqueline Fraysse, these first perfumes were named after furs themselves. The idea behind these perfumes is that their fragrance would cover up the animalic and sometimes unpleasant smell of the furs themselves.

Zibeline, whose name means sable in French, was a floral chypre perfume with balsamic undertones had notes of oakmoss, patchouli, vetiver, benzoin, ambergris, incense, jasmine, rose, ylang ylang, aldehydes and bergamot.

Chinchilla Royal, a lush floral perfume had dominant notes of jasmine and rose.

Hermine, ermine in French, a heady tropical floral perfume had notes of jasmine, rose, magnolia, orange, ambergris, musk and tonka bean.

Une Fleur de Fourrure, simply a "flower for fur", was a simple jasminic perfume.
